Sports Physiotherapy in Pune - Wakad Athlete Recovery Clinic

Home /Physical Therapy for Athletes

Recreational sport in Pune has changed in the last five years. The Hinjewadi marathon clubs have grown five-fold. The pickleball courts in Baner did not exist three years ago and now run waitlists. Cricket academies in Wakad coach 200 children every weekend. Every one of these activities produces injuries that a generic 'sports clinic' cannot fully address.

The sports physiotherapy unit at Dr. Swaroop's Ortho and Polyclinic, Wakad runs sport-specific rehabilitation programmes designed by therapists who actually understand running gait, bowling biomechanics and overhead racket sports. Athletes from running clubs, gyms, cricket academies and corporate sports leagues across Pune use this clinic regularly.

Common Sports Injuries Treated

Running Injuries

Running is the most popular recreational sport in PCMC. It is also the most injury-prone if done without preparation.

  • Iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome - outer knee pain after long runs
  • Runner's knee (patellofemoral pain) - front knee pain on stairs and downhill
  • Plantar fasciitis - heel pain on the first steps in the morning
  • Achilles tendinopathy - back of ankle pain
  • Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome) - front shin pain in beginners
  • Stress fractures - most often in the tibia and metatarsals
  • Hamstring strains - common in older runners and after speed work

Cricket Injuries

Cricket-specific injuries dominate the Wakad and Hinjewadi schoolboy and academy populations.

  • Bowler's lower back stress fractures (pars defect)
  • Rotator cuff strain in fast bowlers
  • Tennis elbow in batsmen and bowlers
  • Hamstring strains while running between wickets
  • Shoulder impingement in throwers and fielders

Badminton and Tennis Injuries

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis)

Rotator cuff and shoulder impingement in overhead smashers

Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee)

Ankle sprains from quick lateral movements

Gym and Weight-Training Injuries

  • Rotator cuff impingement in heavy bench-press lifters
  • Lower back pain from poor deadlift form
  • Knee tendinopathy from heavy squat work
  • Forearm tendinopathy from overhead pressing

Pickleball Injuries

  • Pickleball elbow (similar to tennis elbow)
  • Ankle sprains from quick changes of direction
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Shoulder impingement from repetitive overhead serves

Football, Basketball and Volleyball Injuries

Sport-Specific Rehabilitation Approach

Generic physiotherapy treats the symptom. Sport-specific physiotherapy treats the symptom and then prepares the athlete to return to the demands of the actual sport.

Phase 1 - Acute Management (Week 1 to 2)

Pain control, swelling reduction, protection of the injured tissue. RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) plus early gentle movement.

Phase 2 - Movement Restoration (Week 2 to 4)

Manual therapy, range of motion restoration, basic strengthening. Activity is reduced but not eliminated - most athletes can cross-train (swimming, cycling) during this phase.

Phase 3 - Strength and Conditioning (Week 4 to 8)

Progressive resistance training, plyometrics, sport-specific movement patterns. The therapist works with the athlete on the actual demands of their sport - not generic squats and lunges.

Phase 4 - Return to Sport (Week 8 to 12)

Sport-specific drills, gradual return to training intensity, return-to-play assessment. The athlete must pass functional tests before competitive return - single-leg hop tests, agility runs, sport-specific simulations.

Pricing for Sports Physiotherapy

  • First athlete assessment (90 minutes): Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,500
  • Follow-up session (60 minutes): Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,200
  • Sport-specific rehab package (10 sessions): Rs. 9,000 to Rs. 13,000
  • Return-to-sport functional testing: Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,500

Many running clubs and corporate sports leagues in PCMC have group rates and partnership programmes with the clinic.

Common Mistakes Athletes in Pune Make

  • Returning to running too soon after a calf strain - re-injury rates above 30 percent
  • Ignoring shin splints until they progress to stress fractures
  • Treating tennis elbow with rest alone instead of strengthening (eccentric loading is the proven treatment)
  • Skipping the strength and conditioning phase and returning straight from pain-free to play
  • Not addressing biomechanics - running shoes, gait, lifting form
  • Self-prescribed massage and pain medication without a diagnosis
