Most orthopedic surgeons in Pune will hand you a list of degrees on the first visit. Dr. Swaroop Solunke prefers to ask you a question instead: how long has the pain been stopping you from doing what you love? The credentials matter, but only after that. Here is the credentials part, since you are reading this page for that reason.
Five-year medical degree from one of Maharashtra's most respected medical schools. Internship rotations at Dr. D.Y. Patil Hospital, Navi Mumbai covered general surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics - the full clinical foundation every good orthopedic surgeon needs before specializing.
Three-year residency training in orthopedic surgery at MGM Medical College, Kamothe. Graduated as a gold medalist. The MGM trauma unit handles one of the highest fracture loads in the Mumbai metropolitan region - Dr. Solunke spent thousands of hours on call there, fixing everything from finger fractures to multi-trauma road accident victims.
Bruderkrankenhaus St. Josef in Paderborn is a recognized European centre for hip and knee arthroplasty. The fellowship year exposed Dr. Solunke to the German approach to total hip replacement, total knee replacement and complex revision surgery. He returned to India with techniques that most Indian-trained surgeons learn only through self-study.
Additional sub-specialty training at Breach Candy Hospital, one of India's most established private hospitals, focused on complex joint replacement and trauma cases that smaller centres typically refer out.
Dr. Solunke completed a fellowship in robotic knee replacement at the Stone Research Foundation, San Francisco. The Foundation is one of the few centres in the United States offering structured robotic arthroplasty training to international fellows. This is the credential that makes him one of a small group of US-trained robotic knee surgeons currently practicing in Pune.
Dr. Solunke does not claim to do everything. He does the following procedures often enough that he is genuinely good at them.
There are roughly 200 orthopedic doctors listed across Pimpri-Chinchwad. Patients still travel from Pimpri, Chinchwad, Nigdi, Akurdi, Aundh, Baner, Pimple Saudagar, Hinjewadi and as far as Talegaon, Chakan and Talwade to consult Dr. Solunke at Wakad. The reasons are consistent across his Google reviews.
If you are 68 years old and have never been told what cartilage is, you should not have to figure it out from a Wikipedia page after the consultation. He uses anatomy charts, X-ray markings and physical demonstrations until the patient and family genuinely understand the problem.
Roughly 60 percent of patients who walk in worried about needing a knee replacement leave with physiotherapy and medication instead. The clinic tracks this number and is open about it. Surgery is the last option, not the first quote.
In larger Pune hospitals, the senior surgeon you consult may not be the one in the operating room. At Dr. Swaroop's Ortho and Polyclinic, the doctor who promises you the surgery is the doctor who performs it and the doctor who shows up at your bedside the next morning.
Dr. Solunke consults and operates at three locations across PCMC.
Marathi, Hindi, English. Patient counselling is done in whichever language the patient and family are most comfortable with.
